What's It All About? 48 HRS. and Catch Me If You Can are two of the movie titles creator/executive producer Jeff Eastin says he had in the back of his mind when thinking up this thrilling new series. You can see those inspirations, as well as that of an established USA Network hit, Burn Notice (the first episode is, in fact, directed by Bronwen Hughes, who has worked on that show), but White Collar surely has a charm and style all its own.
Beginning with a 90-minute pilot episode, the show follows the unlikely partnership between a con artist and an FBI agent, who have been playing cat-and-mouse for years. The action kicks off when charming criminal mastermind Neal Caffrey (Bomer) is caught by his nemesis, FBI agent Peter Burke (DeKay). After escaping a maximum-security prison to find his long-lost love, Neal is nabbed by Peter once again. Rather than returning to jail, Neal suggests an alternate plan -- provide expertise to assist the Feds in catching elusive criminals in return for his freedom. Peter quickly finds that Neal provides insight and intuition that cannot be found on the right side of the law, and so the partnership begins.
Including Thiessen as Peter's wife, a terrific recurring role for Diahann Carroll as a wealthy widow, and an always-amusing Garson (Sex and the City) as Neal's streetwise pal Mozzie, White Collar has great performances and almost has the feel of an '80s action buddy movie combined with a breezy '60s caper flick. USA Network continues its sizzling run of original series with a literally arresting dramatic thriller, filled with nice touches of humor. Could be this season's answer to Burn Notice.
