Special Ops Mission

Network: Military Channel

Featuring Wil Willis

*******8/25/10: PER MILITARY CHANNEL, THIS SERIES DOES NOT HAVE A PLANNED RETURN DATE. THE NETWORK SAYS IT WAS HAPPY WITH THE SHOW’S PERFORMANCE AND HOST WIL WILLIS. FUTURE PRODUCTIONS WITH THE SERIES AND/OR WIL HAVE NOT BEEN RULED OUT.

What’s It All About? In each episode of this limited series, special forces operator Wil Willis must complete a nearly impossible mission. Using his 14 years of Army Ranger and Air Force Para-Rescue experience, his task is to complete a complex series of military objectives to survive, evade and escape a highly trained and highly motivated opposition force that’s determined to stop him. Each episode introduces a new “Op-For” team, including some of the best manhunters on the planet, employing the latest in  high-tech weaponry and military tactics to stop Willis. Meanwhile, Willis, traveling alone, must rely only on his own sense of survival to evade the “Op-For” team.

WHILE “SPECIAL OPS MISSION” IS NO LONGER ON, WIL WILLIS IS HOSTING A NEW SERIES FOR MILITARY CHANNEL CALLED “TRIGGERS: WEAPONS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD,” BEGINNING NOV. 30, 2011. OUR INTERVIEW WITH WILLIS ABOUT THAT SERIES CAN BE FOUND HERE.

What happened in 2009?

What's It All About? In each episode of this limited series, special forces operator Wil Willis must complete a nearly impossible mission. Using his 14 years of Army Ranger and Air Force Para-Rescue experience, his task is to complete a complex series of military objectives to survive, evade and escape a highly trained and highly motivated opposition force that's determined to stop him. Each episode introduces a new "Op-For" team, including some of the best manhunters on the planet, employing the latest in high-tech weaponry and military tactics to stop Willis. Meanwhile, Willis, traveling alone, must rely only on his own sense of survival to evade the "Op-For" team.

The series rounds out its run this fall with these episodes:

September 10: "Operation Freebird Down" -- A force antagonistic to the government has set up anti-aircraft systems. Willis's mission is to take direct action against the radar and communication system that allows this anti-government force to track allied planes. But as he is navigating his mission, an allied plane is shot down and a pilot parachutes into enemy territory, leaving Willis to modify his mission to find and rescue the downed pilot. With the injured pilot in tow, Willis moves carefully through enemy territory to save both of their lives while the opposition force is in full pursuit.

September 17: "Operation One Shot" -- A murderous drug lord has established a military training camp along a river, and is rumored to be going to the camp to observe its operations. Willis's mission is to enter the heavily guarded camp as a lone sniper, identify the drug lord, and eliminate him. Willis dons a camouflage suit and enters the camp, looking for the opportune moment to take his sniper shot. First he must positively identify his target and confirm this with his Central Command. Getting identification and then getting into position to take his shot tests Willis's ability to move stealthily through difficult terrain.

does anyone really think this is for real? Possibly it is standard opperation procedures for a third world army! It’s not for real people. Real missions of this nature fail 50% of the time, with a real team. Wil is a Paramedic, who jumps! The air force program washes out over 90% because of the medical program, not the soldiering end of it. It’sa bird course, in truth! Give it a rest. It’s good TV though I suppose, compared to the other crap on. Would love to see him try against a real enemy. Try the SAS, the JTF2, or the french foreign Legion 2rep. He’ll get killed before the first comercial!

The only negative feedback is apparently from someone in that 90%. It’s all good buddy, let it go. Some men just don’t have what it takes.

This show is awesome! It needs to be marketed better. I missed several. If it were on DVD, I’d buy it.

PJ’s are mainly trained in pararescue, however, when they do jump in and search for missing soldiers they do so with small teams and with very little supplies to make sure they are highly mobile. I saw them in action in Afghanistan when one of our soldiers was caught by a river current during a crossing. They jumped in at night, in a relatively small team, and walked around searching for this guy. The military would never send these guys out like that without extensive combat training as well as medical training. They are elite. I would say that these situations aren’t what one would expect in War, but special ops are called on to assist in all types of confict, foreign and domestic. It would probably be innacurate to say that they would never find themselves in these situations, but they would have more personel. I love this show and enjoy getting into the mind of an SF soldier as he assesses each situation.

What people don’t seem to realize is that no real operator would ever be put in these situations on their own. If they even watched the show they would see “impossible mission” at the start of every show. Of course it has to have some kind of “TV” aspect to it since it is on television. What it does do is put you into the mind of a Spec Ops operator and learn to respect what they have to put themselves through. Coming from a Ranger background, I can tell that Will is no joke. Great TV I hope we get a 2nd season.

I’m in a Special Operations Group now and I enjoy your show Wil. I’m glad that you keep it real and explain real-life examples of situation that can and do occur. Don’t stray from real-scenario to TV-land-buildup. I hope a second season is in the works; if you have room you should take members of the audience with you on missions. I know it would slow you down, but it would allow viewers to relate and a chance to live a dream. I volunteer for the first episode season 2, Operation Kondor = enter and eliminate all enemy combatants holding hostages, retrieving stolen stingers, and disabling assets. 10 OpFor operators.

    66. thomas moore
      Posted December 4, 2010 at 4:57 pm | Permalink

Firstlty I agree with Corey. I can not believe that they took this show off the air! Now i agree that they should advertise more for the show because I luckily was just flipping the channels when i came across this ” GEM ” and I was instantly hooked. Its far better than most of the shows on the network and with only six shows it was huge with all my friends alot of which, like me prior service. Will shows you what it takes to be the BEST and how hard things can get. You get a real feeling that he’s truely stressed, unrested, angry, hungry, disappointed, and you know its real and not just “reality” tv. I dont know what they were thinking at the network and i didnt see the numbers for viewers but Will and his team should shop this to another network. Discovery, or worst case Fox. Just get it done.

Secondly: Arthur your right! I dont have Facebook but those who do please post your comments there as well.

Thirdly: Where the F*ck are all these nerdy gamers that play these games non stop. Where is there support? They are “hardcore” with names like Big_killa3000 or hardCore_specOpp08? What? They dont want to know what the real thing may be like but i guess instead would rather just sit there in there 20′s at mommies house or with 6 roomates looking like a flop house drinking code red squeezing zits and talking about how “awesome” their gaming skills are and what it would be like to see a b**b. I dont know how many people need to write in and complain but I say lets make it happen.

And Last: Will, you kick a** and thank you for making this show. Looks fun I hope they realise what a big mistake they made by not filming a second season sooner and you get offerd a fat stack. If not Its there loss along with all your fans out there.

    67. Posted December 10, 2010 at 11:05 am | Permalink

OK, This should help the network make a move on the next season-2.

I will make FREE armor suits from my web site “exomechs.com” just for your show.We make them for high end movies and game makers, Like HALO and GEARS of WAR. Now lets get Wil back.

I just discovered this show on Netflix and instantly watched all 6 episodes. This is by far the coolest show I’ve ever seen. Can’t believe they aren’t going another season. Maybe another network could pick it up. Let’s hope they come to their senses.

Bring it back! You have to be crazy or experiencing some government censorship (due to detailed military tactics) not to put this show back on the air with big advertisers. Me and my kids love it, I caught one episode on TV and searched netflix. BAM, watched the rest of them in one sitting.

Spec ops mission is by far the greatest show I’ve ever watched. It’s hypnotizing. Me and my cousin play airsoft and he introduced me to this show. I stayed up for hours at night watching it only to find out there is no second season. If they weren’t going to make a second season they could have atleast made the first season longer. The military channel is making a huge mistake canceling this show, I mean, let’s face it, it’s the only show on the channel that’s even the slightest bit entertaining. We should gather all the fans and go on strike outside their studio.

They really need to bring this show back. My friends and family all LOVE it and Wil so they need to get it together and make more of these. Does anyone know of a petition or anything still going to try to get the Military Channel to bring this back? I am going to email the military channel myself here’s hoping!

One thing to think about is how much money in the US is spent on private military contractors at the moment. To be honest I doubt the Military Channel could afford produce this show. Because unlike shows like Top Sniper; this is not a recruitment add for the military with tax money behind it. I hope he did so well in show casing his skills in an artful and fun way that some group picked him up to train their people. If anything it shows the very unique way our generation views life and death and also how amazing of a warrior the USAF PJ can be while still being mainly a rescue operator he took on all comers literally single handed.

I dont watch TV much but this show had me hooked from the first 5 minutes and I had to find every episode on netflix and watch the whole season in one sitting. By far this was the most exciting reality show ever. I cant thank the men in our armed forces enough for what they do and Wil you have a fan for life. Rambo has nothing on you, I hope your were not injured to bad in that last show. It looks like the dangers are real in making of these episodes and I know that must have alot to do with not making season two. I wish you the best feel better.

@19 Really, dude? Can you be even more stereotypical? So you’re saying every gamer is “nerdy”? You assume that every person who is a gamer is in their 20′s and lives at home with their parents? You, sir, are very short-sighted. Just to throw your validity out the window, I’m a gamer myself. I’m 30 yrs old and have been gaming since the Atari 2600 (early 80′s if you aren’t “up to date” on that), and will continue to do so. I “own” my own home. I’m married and have a daughter and a son. My wife is an RN and I’m a network tech at our city’s industrial park (you can Google that if you don’t know what that means). We live very comfortably. The first thing my wife said that drew her to me was my looks. So, I don’t know why you think us “gamers” are painted like that. Oh, btw, my wife is an avid gamer too. Gaming is my hobby, and yes, I’m VERY good at it. I’m also very good at my career, being a parent, and taking care of my family. I love FPS (first-person shooters), typically the Call of Duty series. So much so that I go 3 times a month at our army post and do paintball. It’s called War Games, the soldiers there do it too. You aren’t allowed to go solo as it’s a minimum 4 person teams. Sometimes it’s civilians against soldiers, and to let you know the soldiers don’t always win. I also love guns. I own several, thanks to my job. Glock model 21, a Benelli M4 Super Black Eagle 12g, a Bushmaster AR-15 rigged out (and believe me, it can pop targets at 800+ yards, theres a vid of me on Youtube doing it), an old Mosin Nagant that I’m trying to get restored and a few more I won’t mention. it’s ok to give your opinion, but don’t be a douchebag critic. Anyways, on topic, I love the show alot. But it’s not that intense. Why? Because these guys are using simunition, and they know it. If it were live rounds, I PROMISE you these guys would be a whole hell of alot more alert and cautious. But, that’s my opinion.

please bring it back!!! awesome show and would be even more popular now given recent developments in iraq (seal team 6). put it back on and advertise the heck out of it. you could do occasional special episodes with “re-enactments” of actual missions. i couldn’t believe it went away.

For those of you claiming this is all a scripted event, or set up, better think again! These missions are a scenario war game.. It’s all psychological. The OPFOR believe KNOW that a counter-force is being sent in, but they believe it’s more than one operative on the grounds. So that is the advantage for WW. It’s one against 4 – 6, which given a real world incident, one operative would suit just nicely with those odds. WW is proving that with his shows. But, as you can see in Operation Frozen Tundra, even he makes mistakes. :)

I’ve been waiting patiently, but when on earth is this show coming back. It can’t be cancelled! With some of the crap on military channel, I can’t believe this would be the show that hits the cutting room floor.

I’m looking over the comments and can’t believe that 2+ years after the show’s last appearance that you’re still getting this kind of response – MC, WTF are you thinking?

For you Wil Willis fans, Wil is hosting a new series for Military Channel called “Triggers: Weapons That Changed the World,” starting Nov. 30, 2011. We interviewed Wil for that series here: http://www.channelguidemagblog.com/index.php/2011/11/22/new-wil-willis-series-triggers-puts-weapons-in-historical-context/

Just finished the last episode on next flix. I found it completely by accident. I can’t believe there aren’t any more of these. Possibly the best senairio show I have ever seen. Nearly watched all 6 in a row. Someone please bring this back.
