Modern Family

Premieres: September 21

Airs: Wednesdays, 9pm ET

Network: ABC

Who Is In It? Ed O'Neill, Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Sarah Hyland, Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould, Ariel Winter, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons

Where We Left Off: With Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) longing for a son, he and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) discuss the possibility of expanding their family.

What To Expect: In the first part of the hit comedy series’ third season premiere, “Dude Ranch,” determined to best Jay (Ed O’Neill) in all things dude ranch, Phil (Ty Burrell) does a little practicing at home before the next Pritchett-Dunphy family vacation. Also, look for Lily to join the conversation this season as producers cast an older child actor to play Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell’s (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) daughter.

The second half of the hour, “When Good Kids Go Bad,” finds Mitch and Cam planning a nice evening with the whole family to break the happy news that they are looking to adopt another child. However, their parade is rained on when they realize Lily may not take well to another baby in the house. Meanwhile, Claire and Jay are each consumed with proving a certain point.

What’s It All About? Employing the increasingly popular “documentary” perspective, this ensemble comedy examines the modern family by following three very different ones, including a gay couple who have recently adopted a Vietnamese baby and an interethnic couple separated in age by a few decades. One of the most promising new shows of the season, Modern Family does a great job of establishing an interesting cast of characters quickly while still generating lots of laughs — no small feat for a first episode. We just wish the show had been given a better time slot than the one between fellow freshman series The Middle and Cougar Town.

What To Expect: In "The Old Wagon," the second season premiere of the Emmy-winning comedy, Claire finally gets Phil to agree to sell their old station wagon, but not before everyone has to take it on one last ride down memory lane. Meanwhile, when a haphazard hammer-wielding Mitchell decides to build a life-size princess castle for Lily, Cameron calls Jay in for reinforcement, and Manny invites a cute girl over for a study date -- which makes Gloria a little uncomfortable.
