What to Expect: After the brutal murder of his wife, Luther (Elba) returns to find himself in a different world. His old unit has disbanded and he becomes part of the newly created Serious and Serial Unit, headed by former police complaints officer Martin Schenk (Crowley). Quickly amassing his new team, he manages to rescue his partner Justin Ripley (Brown) from having to go back into uniform, and before long they’re coping with their first case, as a masked man meanders the streets of London, carrying out ritualistic murders in historic locales as he builds to a final climactic masterpiece.

At the same time, Luther is trying to rescue Jenny, an old acquaintance’s daughter, from the seedy world of prostitution. But his mission to give Jenny a new start in life comes with a high price, and he’s caught between breaking the rules and the mobsters that rule the world of prostitution in London.

Creator Neil Cross says: “In the Luther sequel, [we’ve got] bigger stories on a wider canvas. We’ve got some familiar faces and some new faces. We’ve got twists and turns. We’ve got bloodcurdling events on the streets of London. We’ve got fear and mayhem on a city-wide scale. We’ve got killers who’ll make you want to check the doors and windows are locked before you go to bed at night. And at the heart of it all, we’ve got DCI John Luther – a man in ruins, but with a heart the size of the moon. Bloodied and battered, but somehow still standing. And still doing what he can.”

What’s It All About? Most modern detectives come with a lot of emotional baggage but keep it under control. But in this intense and cerebral drama, brilliant homicide detective John Luther has deadly emotions that are constantly in play — both on the job and dealing with his recent breakup with his wife. In a slightly different take on the crime mystery, the murderer in each episode is known up front, so viewers can watch the cat-and-mouse game between Luther and his quarry — and the result is not always score one for the sort-of good guy.
