As previously announced, IBM is continuing to develop a supercomputer with the ultimate goal of competing against Jeopardy!’s best and brightest contestants. Code-named “Watson” after IBM founder Thomas J. Watson, the computing system is designed to rival the human mind’s ability to understand the actual meaning behind words, distinguish between relevant and irrelevant content, and ultimately, demonstrate confidence in delivering precise final answers. Jeopardy! will be used as a benchmark for Watson’s intelligence because of the show’s high level of accuracy and its challenging game format. IBM will continue to host sparring matches with Watson and top Jeopardy! players throughout the fall.
Where We Left Off: The No.1 rated quiz show in syndication, and a Guinness record holder for most awards won by a TV game show, maintained its standing as the game show to beat.
What To Expect: Season 26 will introduce the Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational tournament from Sept. 17 through May. These special episodes will be broadcast on the third Thursday of every month, with a guaranteed cash prize of $1 million going to the winning star's favorite charity. A total of over $2.5 million will be donated throughout the season. The first round of celebs on Sept. 17 are former Celebrity Jeopardy! contestants who played well in their previous appearances. These include Wolf Blitzer, Dana Delaney and Andy Richter. Other stars scheduled to compete over the season include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Doug Savant, Christopher Meloni, Elizabeth Perkins and Pat Sajak. In each quarterfinal game, participants are guaranteed $25,000 for their charity, while the winner is guaranteed $50,000 and advancement to the semifinals.
This season also introduces the show's new Sony Electronics-inspired permanent set. The customized set includes a game board featuring 36 of Sony's latest HD-LCD monitors, as well as OLED technology and other innovation.
