What happened in 2009?

What to Expect: The second season continues its exhaustive look at the 150 breeds the American Kennel Club recognizes. The first episode covers Dalmatians, Siberian huskies and German shorthaired pointers. By the next week, chows and the eternally fluffy English sheepdog are featured. Experts discuss which dogs are best for city living and which get along best with toddlers. They explain each breed’s quirks and history and cite famous dogs of that breed. This season also focuses on the Pekingese, Australian shepherd and Bernese mountain dog. The fourth episode has a segment on Portuguese water dogs, the most famous of which is Bo, first pup. The series will again give way to the companion series Cats 101, for a few weeks, from Nov. 7-Nov. 21, before picking up with more new episodes at the end of November.

Breeds covered in each episode --

Oct. 3: German shorthaired pointer; Havanese; Dalmatian; Pomeranian; Siberian husky (following this episode, there will be a Dogs 101 special episode called "Ugly Dogs," which introduces dogs from all walks of life that are "so ugly they're cute")

Oct. 10: Olde English sheepdog; Chow Chow; Toy Fox terrier; Brittany; Miniature schnauzer

Oct. 17: Australian shepherd; Xoloitzcuintli; Korthals Griffon; Pekingese; Chesapeake Bay retriever

Oct. 24: Bernese mountain dog; Afghan; Portuguese water dog; Cairn terrier; Alaskan malamute

Oct. 31: Border collie; Chinese crested; English mastiff; Italian greyhound; Lhasa apso

Nov. 28: A special episode on "designer dogs," such as the Labradoodle, Puggle, Chiweenie, Goldendoodle, Cavachon and Chorkie

Dec. 5: "Rare Breeds" -- the Puli, Thai Ridgeback, Lagotto Romagnolo, Peruvian Inca Orchid, New Guinea Singing Dog and Karelian Bear Dog

Dec. 12: "Puppies" -- Special episode offering advice on every phase of a dog's puppyhood

    What happened in 2010?

Its so funny because I thought the same thing and I’ve been checking this show on my digital cable ever since it came out to see if they will. A lot of other people on the net have been wondering this as well. They seem to be one of the most popular yet misunderstood dogs and I think they should do a pit bull segment so people can see how goofy, loving, smart and fun-loving they really are.

I agree with Katie and Tania completely. They need to do a segment on Pits. They are a completely misunderstood breed. I was one of the people growing up that though they were just a vicious breed. Then I was introduced to a Pit of one of my friends and feel in love with the breed. I adopted one (my baby Diamond)and I am currently considering getting another. I learned very quickly they are a breed that need lots of exercise and room to run around which fits in perfectly with me. I also learned like most other dogs they can have a personality all their own. Mine is a big baby. I’ve had many other dogs in my life and this is the biggest baby I’ve ever had in a dog, which is the complete opposite of what I was expecting, but I am very happy with. I would not trade or get rid of her for anything. Hopefully in the next season Dogs 101 will do a segment on this breed.

Thank you I’m glad others addressed that. It seems misleading that when the show is on a pit bull is one of the two dogs on display but there has yet to be a segment on such a great breed

Pit Bulls are such a misunderstood breed and I feel that because Dogs 101 is a popular and reliable source of information, an episode with Pits can greatly help open people’s eyes that they are just as great as any other dog. As a Pit Bull owner, I’ve grown to understand how loyal and loving these dogs are.

Let the world know, Dogs 101!

Well, I’ve been keeping myself busy studying each breed of cat and dog (designer and purebred), that is. I’ve learned about the Mastador, that’s a cross between the Labrador Retriever and English Mastiff. Spike’s a loped-eared Mastador, a dog actor best known for his main role as the title character in the 1957 classic movie, Walt Disney’s “Old Yeller”. Spike also appeared in Paramount’s “A Dog of Flanders” with Donald Crisp and David Ladd in 1959 and “The She-Creature” in 1956. In 1961, Spike was the star of “The Silent Call” with Roger Mobley, David McLean and Gail Russell, sadly, “The Silent Call”‘s not out on VHS or DVD. I’m a big fan of Spike for playing Old Yeller, somehow I would love to have this magnificent designer dog.

You should do a segment on the Black Mouth Cur. I have one and she’s a great dog. I had never heard about them until my wife and I saw an ad in the paper. We did some research and decided that breed would be a good match for my family. She is very protective of our 2 year old daughter. Very playful and loving dog. I don’t think many people have heard of this breed, at least not here in Wisconsin as it is a breed more common in the south.

I am disappointed to see that the Giant Schnauzer had not been profiled on this show. I know there are hundreds of dog breeds and its impossible to include them all but due to the giant’s exceptional intelligence, loyalty, and insatiable need for mental and physical activity, they should have been included in many “the best” episodes. Particularly, smartest dog and best travelling dog. :)

Considering “pit bull” isn’t a breed but a collection of breeds. They have infact done an episode on american pit bull terriers as well as staffordshire bull terriers. Ignorant people hurt my head
