Bored to Death returns for Season 3 with eight episodes premiering Oct. 10 on HBO. Guest stars this season include John Hodgman, Oliver Platt, Bebe Neuwirth, Patton Oswalt, Dick Cavett, Olympia Dukakis, Isla Fisher, Sarah Silverman, Casey Wilson, Halley Feiffer, Mary Steenburgen and David Rasche.

This season, Jonathan Ames (Schwartzman) has published “A Blonde in the Woods,”  his collection of mystery stories, and is living in the topmost apartment of Brooklyn’s Williamsburgh bank tower, while putting his sleuthing skills to the test for a myriad of clients new and old. Meanwhile, Jonathan’s mentor and benefactor George Christopher (Danson) has left the magazine business to open his artisanal restaurant George on Jane, located on Jane Street in the West Village, while also attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughter.  And Jonathan’s close friend, cartoonist Ray Hueston (Galifianakis) begins to transform into a Park Slope mom when one of the lesbians who bought his sperm on the black market contacts him after her divorce.

What happened in 2009?

What’s It All About? After his girlfriend leaves him because he drinks too much white wine and smokes too much pot, struggling writer Jonathan Ames (Schwartzman) decides on a whim to post an ad on craigslist offering his services as a private detective — something he has neither the remotest expertise nor interest in outside of the detective novels he reads. But someone responds to his ad, and Jonathan has nothing better to do, so he meets with the prospective client. After he helps the woman find her missing sister, Jonathan gets the itch for detective work, but always seems to have a difficult time keeping his own personal problems out of his clients’ situations. Fans of Schwartzman’s offbeat work in Wes Anderson films will love him here. But the real highlights of Bored to Death might be Galifianakis (The Hangover) as Jonathan’s curmudgeonly comic-book writer friend, and Danson in an unusual role as Jonathan’s magazine editor boss who’s constantly interfering in Jonathan’s newfound venture.

    What happened in 2010?

What To Expect: After a serious pounding in the boxing ring, things weren’t looking too good for New York writer, romantic and unlicensed private eye Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman) as the first season concluded. The series returns to find Jonathan’s second novel completed (and rejected), so he’s augmenting his income by moonlighting as a creative-writing teacher, while also taking on some desperate new clients — ranging from a kinky cop to the publishing rival of his sexagenarian pal. Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis are also back.
